Welcome Home

Welcome Home was released in 1989. Kris Kristofferson plays the part of Jake Robbins, a war veteran who returns home after being missing (presumed dead) for over a decade and a half.

The movie was no moneyspinner. It was under-promoted and some think unfairly so. It had it all. Something to say, a social statement, an acclaimed director and some world-class actors of the era.

This was Franklin Schaffner‘s last film. Schaffner served in the US Navy in World War 11. His previous movies included Planet of the Apes, Patton, Nicholas and Alexandra, Papillon and The Boys from Brazil. Schaffner did not live to see this film released. He died shortly after completing the film following treatment for lung cancer.

Welcome Home is one of the most scandalously underrated movies of Kris Kristofferson’s acting career. This deeply touching film is brilliantly directed by the late great Franklin J Schaffner (Papillon).

It tells the story of a Vietnam war veteran (played by KrisKristofferson) who comes back to his family, years after they thought he was dead.

I’m not going to give too much away here so as not to spoil it for folk who haven’t seen it yet. I can confidently say except that the entire cast, including Kris, are superb actors who did a great job.

Brian Keith, Jobeth Williams and Sam Waterston appear alongside Kris – All of them are in top form.

I cannot for the life of me work out why this film was not a success, or why the film was not garlanded with Oscar nominations.

The film is a deeply profound human drama comparable to others like Ordinary People and On Golden Pond – Big films with something to say – Movies that awards were designed to pay homage to.

Welcome Home never received any such acclaim.

Kris’ acting career slumped. It was a full 6 years until he made a comeback with Lone Star.

In my opinion, Welcome Home remains a worthy addition to the canon of great Kris Kristofferson movies. Watch it – and enjoy.

This movie is my favorite that Kris did. I have watched it many times and I do not mind seeing it again. This movie does show how our government likes to cover up and mess up lives of people who fight for them. Thewhole movie is well done.
