Kris Kristofferson is about to turn 84. Chris Gantry recently wrote a song for Kris that encapsulates what both of these iconic songwriters are all about.

The Narrow Path

by Chris Gantry

He baffled the witty, confounded the powers, to be who he swore he would never succeed, With a song and a guitar he made true believers out of those who had nothin’ much that they believed

Everglades during sunrise at the Long Pine Key area © B Livieri

Wisdom gets into the bones of the needs, wantin’ something they reach for but never attain, It took one lonesome singer to buy them their ticket, to a gold mine of freedoms they could stake their claim.

Chorus: The narrow path open to a highway that’s wide, When you make room for angels kicking devils aside. His demons were many he beat with his song. I think his name is Kris, but then I could be wrong.

Ice Age Trail in the Kettle Moraine State Forest © B Livieri

We get up each day, amazed we’re still breathing, for taking those breaths there’s dues we must pay, Like that singer who leaves those great songs on your doorstep, leave something on somebody else’s today.

***Repeat Chorus****

Raymond McDonald’s book, Merle Haggard was a Friend of Mine, is complete, and will be out soon. He told our group about it.

Birth of a Book

So many great friends and fans of Merle’s have asked me to write this book about Merle. I’ve completed the manuscript. It’s all good. No negative energy at all. He was a wonderful man and called me a friend and son for over 50 years. This is my tribute to his legacy.
The art work is a mock up that a close friend has developed, the actual cover will come later this summer. Thanks to all my friends and family for the encouragement.

Ray McDonald

Why Them?

Kris’ fans have been hoping an autobiography for years. Most of us have accepted that Kris’ life story already exists within the lyrics of his songs. Merle and Kris go back a long way. Their stories are entwined. This book is of special interest to Kris’ fans as it includes a chapter dedicated to the Silver Tongued Devil himself. The chapter is called, “ Why me?”. Ray says that he spoke with Lisa Kristofferson about some of the details, and that Merle loved touring with Kris who went over to Merle’s bus after each show during that last tour. The two icons laughed together – A lot.

Anita, an avid Kris fan, added her thoughts.

Get on up There

Can hardly wait to read it. Kris loved working with Merle and the Strangers in the period before Merle’s untimely death — gone far too soon. He never forgot that Merle had good and generous things to say about him when others were slamming him for his sensual songs, his hippie-looking appearance, and just about everything but his dog, and then only because he didn’t have a dog. Kris was up against Merle for that 1970 Song of the Year award, and when he slammed his head against the pew and was so dazed he was just sitting there, it was Merle who said “get on up there”. And in his acceptance speech, after he thanked Johnny Cash “for making this possible”, Kris paid tribute to Merle by saying “I’m just glad I wasn’t up against ‘Today I Started Loving You Again'” — one talented songwriter acknowledging the excellence of another whom he deeply respected. Of course, Merle took Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year at that awards show, so he had a good night. Nonetheless, Merle was never Old Guard Nashville; he always marched proudly to his own drummer.

Kris Kristofferson has a long history of supporting causes and getting things done. Boris is a student living in Belgium, and a Kris fan.

Pandemic

We are all wondering how to cope with the pandemic. Boris, and some of his young friends are doing their bit to help those more vulnerable than themselves navigate these frightening and disruptive times.

Risk

Elderly people, especially those who cannot rely on family, friends or neighbours, are especially vulnerable to this awful virus – An illness that we still know little about.

Governments wordwide are concerned about older people because they are more likely to get really unwell if they are infected. Self-isolation is the only effective way to avoid getting the virus – Yet people need to eat, and in order to do that, they need to shop.

Senior Support

Boris is one of five young people involved in the outreach.

They are cooking fresh spaghetti bolognaise, crammed with vegetables, and will sell it to seniors for 2.5 Euros. They are distributing hot meals to vulnerable people who need to self-isolate. They hope to provide affordable, wholesome nourishment and greatly reduce the need for vulnerable people to break isolation and reduce the risk of exposure through shopping.

In concrete terms, we are going to bring spaghetti to elderly people across the three boroughs of Zoersel, so that they do not have to go to the store that day. We will take every precaution regarding hygiene. If people are struggling financially and can support this, we will bring the spaghetti for free. We are really aiming for the target group of vulnerable Zoerselaars and do not want to compete with caterers.

Van Echelpoel

More information or ordering via borisvanechelpoel@gmail.com

Religious, political, youth and other groups have a wonderful opportunity to do their bit for communities. This is a time to put differences aside, and pull together. It is heartwarming to see young people step up and do what they can during these troubled times.

Suddenly – the whole world is in the grip of a pandemic. While we wash our hands, clip our fingernails, self-isolate and do whatever we think is best to protect ourselves and others from Covid-19, there is some good news.

WHO Let the Dogs Out

Carol mentioned that pet abandonment was escalating because some people believed that dogs were spreading the virus. This horrified many of us who regard our furry friends as family members.

These are frightening times. The thought of loved, defenceless pets being discarded is hard to process. They bring joy and comfort into a home, and see us through the hardest of times.

Happily, this is is now known to be highly unlikely. We hope news spreads as quickly as rumours, and not one more pet is discarded due to fear and mis-information.

The current spread of COVID-19 is a result of human to human transmission. To date, there is no evidence that companion animals can spread the disease.

There is no justification in taking measures against companion animals which may compromise their welfare,”

World Organisation for Animal health

Somebody tweeted, “Who Let the Dogs Out!” – We sing along in gratitude.

Nashville disaster -- two words I never thought I would ever see side by side.

Severe storms ravaged Nashville and caused havoc and heartbreak. The headlines just keep on coming, and the full impact is still unknown. Kris Kristofferson fans, like many people all over the world, are appalled as they try to process the impact.

Staring at photographs and videos does little to shatter the disbelief that this is happening.

Tears, Tributes, Thoughts & Times

Carol Says ..

A devastasting tornado hit East Nashville last night. Fatalities have been reported and extensive damage to buildings is being reported as the sun rises. The Basement East, where Kris and the Strangers played two years ago for three consecutive nights was ripped in half .

Carol Roshkind
Photograph posted with statement saying the staff of The Basement East are all safe -- M J Grimes

We cannot say anymore about the tragedy that is unfolding right through the area -- It’s all far to raw. The picture of the venue tore me up, the sign saying I Believe in Nashville was the final straw.

It seems like just the other day that Kris Kristofferson and Scott Joss performed with Ben Haggard and the Strangers, at The Basement East 14-16 May 2018.

Lori Says ..

I postponed my transfer back to Oklahoma from Knoxville an extra month so I could still be in Tennessee to catch Kris Kristofferson and the Strangers as well as Ben and Noel Haggard at The Basement East in Nashville. Front Row to see this legend in a small bar in Nashville is an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I know the City of Nashville and State of Tennessee will rebuild and recover from this devastating event. So many of my friends and music family had close calls last night. I am thankful they are all safe. My heart goes out to those who lost their lives. Homes and belongings can be replaced. Friends and loved ones cannot. Hug those you love a little tighter tonight. Tell them you love them. Life is fragile and can be taken away in the blink of an eye.

James Says ..

Thinking of NASHVILLE this morning after waking up to hear it was hit badly last night by yet another BIG tornado & 21+ are dead , many injured & major damage has occurred. I drove in the day after the last BAD one hit downtown & it was brutal. Lines down , windows out in many buildings , houses destroyed & debris everywhere !! Never had I seen anything like it. God be with those affected by this awful event.

Extract from the book by Andrew Joyce : Release date March 2020

Danny’s Road Trip

Hey guys, it’s me, Danny—your favorite dog. I’m hangin’ out just listenin’ to Willie sing a little Kris.

My human, Andrew, doesn’t get it. He doesn’t know that Kris and Willie are speaking for God. Have you ever listened to Sunday Morning Coming Down?Andrew is off the boat … gettin’ into trouble no doubt.

Me, I’m listenin’ to Willie Nelson. I love to ride in cars, don’t you? Sticking my head out the window, barking at any dogs I see along the way. I can even put up with Andrew when I’m riding in the car. So this is what I wanted to tell ya.

Two days ago, Andrew took me out to his car, opened the door, and told me to get inside. Normally I wouldn’t do what he wanted. But a ride in the car? So I jumped in. I didn’t know where we were going; however, as long as I could stick my head out the window, I didn’t care.It was a Sunday morning, the roads were empty, which was a good thing because Andrew was a little the worse for wear. He had had a rough Saturday night and he was still a little tipsy. And just like in the song, we stopped by a church and sat outside and listened to the choir. It was then that I knew what Kris meant when he wrote, “There’s something in a Sunday makes a body feel alone.” Because I saw it in Andrew’s eyes that Sunday morning.

It was indeed a Sunday morning coming down.I didn’t know it at the time, but Andrew was looking for something. He had a hurt in his heart … he had an emptiness in his soul.

We never go for rides to nowhere, but I guess he felt he was already nowhere on that Sunday morning. He turned to me and said, “I need a beer.”

You need more than a beer, pal … you need help. We were still by the church and Andrew was wishing he was stoned. I knew that the only thing Andrew cared about more than getting high was me. So before he could start the car and go looking for booze on that Sunday morning, I jumped out the window and took off, knowing that he would chase after me.

As long as he was focused on me, he would not dwell on his Sunday morning coming down. I’m sorry to say that he caught up with me right away. Then we went and bought a six-pack. It was indeed a Sunday Morning coming down … and it came down right SMACK on the head of my human.

P.S. Now, before you all get all concerned for poorAndrew, I wrote this a couple of years ago. I didn’t write a new story this month because I’m on vacation.

Anyway, it was me to the rescue (as usual) because after that infamous Sunday, I told Andrew to throw the TV out the window and sit down at the computer and write something about his misbegotten youth. It would be a whole lot better than bingeing on The Kardashians, which would drive anyone to drink!

Well, one thing led to another, and now with over 200 short stories and seven novels under his belt—almost a million published words—he doesn’t have time to get into trouble.

Nowadays on Sunday morning we go down to a local restaurant and sit outside where dogs are allowed and have a nice healthy breakfast with … maybe … an occasional Bloody Mary thrown in, but only one. No more six-packs for breakfast.

Convoy was released in 1978. The film is based on the 1975 C W McCall song with the same name.

Convoy fan? Checkout @ConvoyMovie on Twitter

https://youtu.be/lqYTX7parRw

Directed by Sam Peckinpah

Actors Include: Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Ernest Borgnine, Burt Young, Madge Sinclair, Donnie Frits

Martin ‘Rubber Duck’ Penwald (Kris Kristofferson) is a trucker who loves his wheels, speed, women and tight-knit community of fellow truckers who stay in contact through their CB radios.

Sheriff “Dirty Lyle” Wallace (Ernest Borgnine) hates truckers. He has a particular dislike for the Rubber Duck, and has one ambition – to get him and his truck off the highways – Forever.

Melissa (Ali MacGraw) overtakes the Rubber Duck in her sporty Jaguar. Some road play involving flashing, speeding and a game of tag catches the attention of Dirty Lyle and things get very out of hand, very quickly.

Other truckers join in, and eventually form a convoy to help Rubber Duck evade capture – And to have some hellraising fun.

The film is a rollercoaster of road, trucks, drug-planting, CB radio banter, accidents, crashes, cars, love, lust, stars and county lines.

Short Review

Watched the Convoy Movie last night. Haven’t seen it in ages. I remember now why I loved it so much… Kris was the perfect rebel/anti-hero; street-smart, fairly level headed, aloof, and sooo sexy. Had a hell of a time falling asleep last night.

Although the movie wasn’t very credible, I thought it was enjoyable and dealt a bit with racism, so some social commentary in there. Certainly banking off the success of Smokey and the Bandit with the “stick it to the man” type of anti-ridiculous and anti-asinine police, so often seen in movies like Smokey, and TV shows like the Dukes of Hazard, depicting the police as bumbling idiots or just mean and evil. – Barbara Livieri

Fan Feedback

Richard – Convoy was Kris at his Box Office peak in the 70’s. It was his 3rd huge hit in a row after Semi Tough and Star is Born. It was also his 3rd movie with the late great Sam Peckinpah. It was hugely entertaining – Brilliant chase scenes with trucks, great on screen chemistry between Kris and Ali MacGraw. Bravura dodgy cop performance from Ernest Borgnine. This was a movie Kris and Peckinpah were born to work on together. It’s an enduring 70’s classic with Kris at the very top of his game.

Joy (from Down Under) prompted this post – “3am Down Under. I have just watched Convoy (or I should say I watched Kris Kristofferson !) for the ?? .. well for the umpthteen Time !!. Stilll gives me goosebumps.”

Scotty – This Movie got me interested in Kris Kristofferson and I didn’t know his name when I was a little boy. Then our friends said that’s Kris Kristofferson he sings and plays country music. What? He driveS a truck and plays country music too? I was hooked.

The truck stop fight was funny all in slow mo. Also the Jesus Freaks were awesome. Somehow I would of got along with those guys – Also the turbocharged diesel barking out of the stacks. Awesome

Kathy – Did you know the Jesus freaks were Kris’s touring band?

Scotty – Really? Wow I never knew that – How cool is that!
As they say in the movie : Life it self is a spiritual event
I will have to watch convoy again today

Nan – Great movie – He was wonderful and looked even better and Ali was beautiful! I was hooked the first song I ever heard and after seeing him I really was hooked – the man is nothing lest than perfection. Such genius and so multitalented.

Barbara –  CB radios – My Dad had one. We had a cabin about 4 hours drive from our house. A few friends also had cabins near there and we’d drive together, in our own little convoy! We all had the CBs, and handles. My brother and I weren’t allowed to play with them. Even though the other kids were. We were so tortured 🙂

Reimer –  I have to admit that CONVOY is the only KK movie I really love…..

Liam – CONVOY is my favorite movie. I have worn out 4 video tapes and 2 dvds watching convoy. I think I pretty much know that movie word for word.

Mike – Watched it when it came out the outcome was I went back to driving long distance. A bull nose Mack with a can on the back and a xj in the chair (I can go on all night ha ha

Nathan – The movie “Convoy,” when I was five, but at that age, but at that age I did not know Rubberduck’s name in real life or his interesting backstory. I only learned his interesting story in adulthood – Oh yes, Kris is fascinating.

Michael – I was 3 years old when it was released but I remember wanting to watch it all of the time growing up because my paw paw was a truck driver.

Chuck – Convoy loved Kris Kristofferson and loved the old Mack trucks

Bev – Love me some Rubber Duck!

Mark – Bought an album, the truck came well after so I was a fan already.

Lenka – WOW. Kris Kristofferson as Rubber Duck-Convoy movie versus Kris Kristofferson’s Music, yeah. Lovely. Keep It Music. Keep On Trucking. Cheers.

Torben – I have been a Kris ( the movie man) fan in 30 years. I have always interested me for trucks and am a truckdriver today. So naturally I have seen Convoy 100 times. Also other films with the man. In my late 30s I got his music under my skin. It became a passion to me so I read his whole life and made me a “ Danish🇩🇰 Kris expert” I hear him several days a week in my lonely truck. My wife and children can some of the songs.

I’ll tell ya what – he was on the way out. When we were on Convoy, they tried to fire him, and I told them I’d walk, too, if they did. And I guess I was hot enough then that they gave a shit. But afterwards I’m walking out of there back to my truck and Peckinpah comes out and says, ‘Goddamn you, ya stupid sonofabitch, I was almost outta here and you dropped me back in this shit!

Scott Joss treated fans to some pictures and some background the day after the first performance of the Kris Kristofferson and the Strangers Australia New Zealand Tour 2019. He shared some photographs and comments from behind the scenes at the start of the Australia New Zealand Tour.

Globetrotting – the Reality

He told fans about the long trip, extended due to runways being fixed at San Francisco airport. The work extended an already lengthy trek across the globe by causing some flights to be delayed for hours, and other flights being cancelled altogether.

We flew out of Redding, Ca. to San Francisco…then had to fly to Houston, Tx. then clear back to San Francisco, from there to Auckland, Nz THEN on to Australia…all because of runway repair in San Francisco! Wow…

Scott Joss

After the gig, Adelaide

Scott told fans that the first show in Adelaide went off exceptionally well. The band were, ” all kinda “wore out” from the flight over” – Fully understandable given the travel glitches.

The night of the first show, Kris seemed stronger than the rest of the band. We were told that he was calm cool and collected, took the microphone and sang beautifully – As well as being in great humour and very funny.

He (Kris) made a bunch of “young bucks” (us) feel kinda silly for saying things like “Man, I’m whipped” or “I cant wait to lay down in my bunk”Guys like Kris, Merle, Willie are made of different stuff then the rest of us mortals…I was just tryin’ to keep up!
