Demons, Devils and Dues

  • Kris Kristofferson Poetry

A poem by Emily Gmitter about Kris Kristofferson – The Silver Tongued Devil himself.

Emily is Admin of the Kris Kristofferson Appreciation Group

This is one of my Kris-related/inspired poems, one that I’d hope would grow up to be a song, but since I never learned to write music…. lol (I have to find my hard copies for all the copyright years, but all my poems were written between about ’77 when I first discovered Kris through the ’80s.)

Demons, Devils and Dues
Well, I don’t know much about the devils that you write of,
And even less about the darkness in your veins.
But I’d like to be the one you want to run to,
When your demons and your dues cause so much pain.
And those dues don’t get no easier when you’re older,
Or so I’ve heard it said often enough.
Those dues – they just get a little different,
But, Lord, that don’t mean they ain’t as tough.
And I wonder when I hear you talk about paying your dues,
If maybe you would trade your yesterdays.
Somehow I get the feeling, if you ever had to choose,
You’d pay them dues again the same old way.
And while I never met the demons that you run from,
Nor shook hands with the devils that you’ve known,
And never belonged to any club that demanded your kind of dues,
I guess I’ve got some horned friends of my own.
And those dues don’t get no easier when you’re older,
Or so I’ve heard it said often enough.
Those dues – they just get a little different,
But, Lord, that don’t mean they ain’t as tough.
