Amnesty International Toast to Freedom

Amnesty International celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012. Kris Kristofferson supported the movements Toast to Freedom, along with many other activists from the music & entertainment industry.

Roots & Music

I was born in the 1960s, and have never known a world without this grassroots organisation watching over human rights from London to …….  everywhere. With over 7 million supporters, Amnesty International is the biggest organisation of its type in the world.

Toast to Freedom

The Carl Carlton and Larry Campbell song, a Toast to Freedom, was used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.

Kris is around 4.50

The song was named after a literal toast – According to Wiki, Peter Benenson attributed the inspiration for Amnesty International to a toast in a bar in Lisbon. He read about two students sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for raising their glasses in a toast to freedom at a bar in Portugal. This small clink gave rise to a powerful movement.

Toast for Freedom was released to support World Press Freedom Day that year. This issue remains as important today as it ever was. Journalists are still locked in far too many prisons for simply telling their truth, a freedom that Kris Kristofferson has always passionately supported.

He is joined in this project by people like Levon Helm, Carly Simon, Ewan McGregor, Donald Fagen, Eric Burdon, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Jane Birkin, Rosanne Cash, The Blind Boys of Alabama & so many others.

Amnesty – Then, Now & Forever

Benenson launched the worldwide “Appeal for Amnesty 1961” campaign in The Observer, a British newspaper His call to action hit a chord & was reprinted in newspapers worldwide Today’s equivalent of going viral. The message sparked a proverbial fire & started the movement which now boasts supporters, members & activists in upwards of 150 countries.
